The short answer: May and September are the sweet spot — warm, beautiful and far less crowded than high summer. But the "best" time really depends on what you’re after.
Season by season
Spring (April–May) Best for gardens & value
Mild days, blooming gardens (the azaleas and rhododendrons at Villa Carlotta are spectacular) and noticeably thinner crowds. Boat tours ramp up through the season. A wonderful, softer time to visit.
Summer (June–August) Best for swimming & buzz
The warmest, liveliest and busiest months, with every tour, lido and restaurant open. Expect higher prices, midday crowds in Bellagio and Varenna, and the occasional afternoon thunderstorm. Book tours and hotels well ahead.
Autumn (September–October) Best all-rounder
Arguably the sweet spot: warm water, golden light, comfortable temperatures and fewer visitors than summer. Early autumn still has full tour schedules; by late October things begin to wind down.
Winter (November–March) Quietest & cheapest
Peaceful and atmospheric, but cold, with many villas, tours and some hotels closed and reduced ferry timetables. Como town stays lively year-round. Best for a low-key city break rather than boating.
Quick recommendations
- For gardens and blooms: late April to May.
- For swimming and long warm evenings: July and August (accept the crowds).
- For the best all-round balance: September to early October.
- For peace and low prices: November to March (with reduced services).
A note on the boating season
Boat tours and the fullest ferry timetables run from roughly April to October. If your trip is built around getting on the water, aim for that window — and book popular tours ahead in peak summer, when they sell out.
